Paranormal happenings on Paradise Road

A hundred years ago, in a dark forest off of Paradise Road, there lived three sisters. The legend goes that the three sisters were witches who would perform evil rituals near the road. The townspeople of Jefferson grew angry that witches were living among them and eventually the the three sisters were hung from trees along side Paradise Road. Now their angry spirits dwell there, forever lurking in the dark forests that surround the road.

Though no one knows for sure if the legend is at all factual, the tale tantalizes teens from many surrounding communities. Other variations of the legend are also told and some are even published.

“I had just read in the book Weird Wisconsin about girls being accused of witchcraft and being hung. Also, I heard that their spirits remain and haunt anyone who ventures down Paradise Road,” Sophomore Sierra Rose said.

The haunted road is located just outside of Jefferson, off of Highway 18. Many people have visited it over the years and for the most part their experiences have been bizarre.

“I have been to Paradise Road twice. The first time my friend and I took photos of the fields and the road and in most of the photos you can see glowing orbs in the field; some are so detailed you can make out facial features. During the second trip with more people we experienced the same things again. After getting out of the car, walking around and taking more photos, it’s safe to say that we all had goose bumps and screamed the majority of the time. Having a lot of people with me made it seem sketchy  with everybody screaming and whatnot, so it was a pretty sick time. I would have to say that the first time was scarier because it was the first time ever being there so we didn’t know what to expect, and a car chased our car down the road right when we got there so it definitely helped to set the mood,” Sophomore Breana McDonough  said.

Paradise Road is known for its creepy reputation. Though some think it’s all just a hoax, many people believe the witch spirits are to blame for the foot steps, screams and other mysterious events that apparently can be heard or witnessed when visitors venture down the dark country road. Many people who come to the road feel uneasy and eerie when they’re on the haunted stretch of road, probably due to what they believe are angry spirits following them around.

“While I was there it felt like someone was constantly watching me. I’m not sure if it was my imagination or not. Also, at one point, everyone I was with thought they saw someone chasing after our van,” Sophomore Hannah Kuenzi said.

Many students will not deny there is something seriously spooky about the road, whether it has to do with angry spirits or not. During the day the area may look like just another scenic, country road, but when the sun goes down the woods get creepier, the screams begin to howl from the trees and the seemingly harmless road transforms into something straight out of a horror film.
