New coaches, same old team. This is a prevailing occurrence for FAHS athletics. However, for boys’ soccer, and first year Head Coach Greg Riddell, a new, experienced coach may be exactly what they need.
Riddell, previously from Baraboo, was a coach for both boys and girls soccer at Baraboo High School before coming to Fort.
“I coached boys’ varsity soccer for 3 years before coming to Fort. When I found out the job was open, I thought that with my experience, it would be a good fit for me,” Riddell said.
Riddell also grew up in Fort and played high school soccer here. He was brought in from the Baraboo School District to teach physical education at Rockwell Elementary.
Ridell hopes his prior experience will make the squad successful.
“I believe I will give a ‘fiery’ edge to the program that they haven’t had in a while. I have been involved in soccer for a number of years, whether it be as a coach or a player, and I’ve always been a believer in getting the most out of each athlete,” Riddell said.
So far, Riddell has been impressed with his team.
“Our Senior Leadership has been outstanding. Having upperclassmen be leaders and role models for the younger players will only benefit the program in the long run,” Riddell said.
Seniors, such as Sam Hartwick, Taylor Smithyman and Devon Bump, will all play key roles this season.
The Blackhawks are currently 1-4, and have yet to play a conference game. Their next game will be Thursday, September 3rd at Monroe for conference play.
