Around the school, students have been carrying the new aluminum water bottles to classes. They are reusable, easy to clean, and students as well as teachers don’t have to spend around thousand dollars each year on water bottles per person, as was reported in emagazine.
“I use the aluminum bottles for two reasons. It’s cheaper to buy one bottle and use it every day than having to spend money on buying a regular water bottle every day. It’s good for the environment and its BPA free, so I don’t have to worry about it in the other bottles,” Business Education Teacher Lynda Curler said.
On average Americans drink about 167 bottles of water each year according to portlandpurewater.com.
Out of those 167 bottles, we Americans only recycle about 23% of them. People could save the landfills from being filled up with plastic water bottle. Each year 38 billion water bottles are distributed to landfills according to waterwebster.org. People can decrease that number just by using the new aluminum water bottles.
“I believe we should get away from as many of the plastic bottles as we can for the safety of the Earth”, Math Teacher Lance Riddell said.
Not only do the aluminum water bottles save the earth they save money.
“There are other advantages to the aluminum bottles than plastic bottles like they don’t leak, break, and they keep your beverage cold longer so you don’t have much waste”, Freshman Liz Gundlach said.
Not all students use their water bottles for water. As a result, there are some critics of the aluminum bottles.
“I think that the aluminum bottles are easier to hide other forms of liquid in them. They are not clear like plastic water bottles, so you can’t tell what’s inside of them. So, the students could be drinking anything,” Freshman Hailey Zilish said.
Although these bottles hold any type of liquid in them, the bottles are lined with a special coating so that no aluminum leaked into the bottle. Reusing plastic bottles could lead to health problems from bacteria and a chemical called BPA ( Bispherol A) which is found in most plastic water bottles. BPA can cause serious health risk like poor brain development in kids, according to ehow.com. There are studies that have shown high amounts of this can cause hormone disruption, especially in teenagers.
The aluminum bottles are easy to carry around to home and away games.
“I like to use my aluminum water bottle for sports, because I’m not wasting my money on something that I have to throw away. Plus the aluminum bottle keeps my water cooler than regular water bottles,” Zilish said.
There are many places were people can find these water bottles including: Walgreen’s, Wal-mart, Shopko, and Kmart. They usually range in price from $15-$30.
